Tourist Attraction in Mathura

Braj is the land of Krishna and Mathura is its epicenter. Since time immemorial, Mathura has been home to the follower of Krishna. The city of milkmaids has a lot to offer when it comes to 'Krishna Tourism'. The city has some of the beautiful temples and religious sites. We list a few of them: -

 

Dwarkadhish Temple:

mathura-templeDwarkadhish Temple is not only an important temple of Mathura but also of India. Built in 1814, Dwarkadhish Temple is situated in the heart of the city of Mathura. Dwarkadhish Temple that is currently managed by the followers of the Vallabhacharya sect is the most visited temple in Mathura. Located in the eastern part of Mathura, not far from the Yamuna River, the temple is architecturally very interesting.

 

Government Museum:

Government Museum was conceived and established in 1874 by F S Growse, the then district collector. It was originally called the Curzon Museum of Archaeology. It is a leading center of research, study, and preservation of Mathura’s splendid heritage of art. The museum is housed in a fine octagonal red sandstone building, located at Dampier Park. It has the largest collection of Kushana sculptures in the country. The museum also has a fine collection of stone sculptures and terracotta, gold, silver and copper coins, clay seals, ancient pottery, paintings, and bronzes.

 

Krishna Janambhoomi:

Krishna Janambhoomi is one of the most visited tourist destination in India. The place has been named so because it is considered to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna. 'Janam' means 'Birth' and 'Bhoomi' means 'Place' in Hindi. It is supposed that the present temple is built over spot of the prison where Lord Krishna took birth.

 

Kusum Sarovar:

The entire site of the Kusum Sarovar is surrounded by the trees of Kadamb (the favorite tree of Lord Krishna). This 450 feet long and 60 feet deep tank is made amidst a number of Ashrams and Temples. This site is believed to be the place where Gopis or milkmaids used to pick flowers for lord Krishna. The flights of stairs from each side take you to the upper platform. The stairs, platform, and the artistic boundary belongs to the era of Lord Krishna.

 

Kusum Sarovar is located about a half hour's walk from another famous tank named Radha Kunj. The place is worth visiting because of the unique architectural beauty and its peace and serenity. The main walls have beautifully carved chhatris that are decorated with frescos depicting darbar, hunting scenes, royal processions and wars. Kusum Sarovar is considered the best swimming spot in the Braj region. Evening Aarti is another attraction of the place that is attended by hundreds of devotees.
